MEET THE ARTIST

“Feeling awe cracks us open. It is a vulnerable experience; it softens us in a time when it’s so easy to harden.” Katherine May

I’m a visual artist, a magpie of words, a hoarder of ideas. I’m curious about the inbetween, the just out of sight, the underneath and the other side; the way through and the edges. I’m Hannah, the founder of ‘All Is Not Lost Art Studio’, and I aspire to be a resilient purveyor of dreams and hope.

My paintings belong to the realms of Elsewhere, paying tribute to sights I’ve seen, tales I’ve heard, places I’ve felt, and the spaces in between. Since writing my dissertation at Uni I’ve been in determined pursuit of the visual sublime via liminality. Lately I’ve been attracted to in-between times, persisting folklore, portals, transitions, awe and enchantment, and our connection, our place, in all that.

I work mainly in inks and bleach, with gilded detailing on paper and raw canvas. Sometimes I use tattoo ink and antique engravings, sometimes I draw using a good old 2b pencil, and paint in watercolour.

I love the work of the Romanticists, the enveloping paintings of Abstract-Expressionists and Whistlers evocative Nocturnes, site specific art by James Turrell and Antony Gormley have long inspired me too.

You can commission me to paint you an original for your space, which I will then frame and install should you want me to, you can buy a ready to hang, hand gilded, giclee print, or an original small study from the collection that I refer to as my ‘Inklings’. The ‘SomeWear’ jewellery collection are my miniature paintings mounted under glass, framed as a pendant or ring, and ready to wear - each is one of a kind and unrepeatable.

I’ve a background in Fine Art from Falmouth College of Art, and still have strong connections to the South West. Currently, I work out of the All Is Not Lost Art Studio, in Alvechurch, Worcestershire, a short train ride from Birmingham.

As I become older, I’ve found myself becoming more connected to the cycles of nature, more in control of my part in my story - as such, I’ve stepped back from teaching, am now hook, line and sinker into my practice full time, and I’ve never been so happy.

Lots of people have asked me, why All Is Not Lost Art.. To me it means to keep moving forward, no matter how incrementally, to keep trying to find the crack where the light gets in, to keep asking questions and being curious, to find the authentic and never lose your sense of wonder.
